What is Chipseal?

At All Purpose Asphalt, we offer both sealcoating and chipseal to any of our Dallas commercial or residential customers. Although similar in some ways, sealcoating and chipsealing are actually two different coating methods. Sealcoating is a cheaper option; however, it often requires annual repairs because potholes are likely to develop between winter and spring as temperatures change. Chipseal is a more expensive process, but increases the protection on the road, making it less likely to require repairs.

Advantages of Chipseal

A sealcoated pavement is more likely to develop potholes than one that is chipsealed. Chipseal, which is sometimes referred to as tar and chip or chip and seal), leaves a smoother road which requires fewer repairs. The chipseal process creates a specific texture that allows for slight expansion and contraction (like a rubber band) without causing cracks and holes. For large projects designed to last, chipseal is typically the best choice. Some advantages of chipseal include:

  • Smoother pavement
  • Fewer repairs over time
  • Asphalt is less likely to crack
  • Roads are more protected
  • “Rubber band” texture accommodates heating and cooling of asphalt
